As a result of adverse financial market conditions, Total Higher Education (T.H.E.)
Loan Program is temporarily suspending its consolidation loan program.
Fortunately, with the introduction of fixed-rate Stafford loans, and with current
variable-rate Stafford loans at a relatively high rate,
consolidation is not a critical repayment strategy for most student loan borrowers.
When market conditions improve, T.H.E. will re-evaluate this decision.
It is likely that variable-rate Stafford loan interest rates, which reset every July 1,
will decrease this upcoming July. That’s because the rate is based on the
three-month Treasury Bill rate, which has decreased about 3% since July 2007.
We are advising eligible borrowers to check back after July 1, 2008 to determine
if consolidation is a smart choice considering their portfolio of loans.
